PSP Student Research/Language Study Awards

Eligibility: These grants are open (on a competitive basis) to all full-time UC Berkeley students, graduate and undergraduate who wish to conduct research or study in Portugal. Fluency in Portuguese is not required to receive a grant, but first preference is given to students who are making progress in a course of study in Portuguese if they are not native speakers. Students in their last year of study are still eligible to apply for funding during the summer months immediately following graduation, but preference is given to research leading to a degree.

The budget should be specific and can include elements such as: Airfare: US to Portugal/Azores. Up to $1500 reimbursable per roundtrip airfare. Taxis/shuttles/rail. Meals/Lodging: $600/wk maximum for short stays, but we prefer longer stays that permit more in-depth work, and for longer stays normally cheaper monthly rates can be obtained. Other costs such as textbooks, field supplies, photocopying. Other sources of funding are encouraged. The budget should be presented for the entire project and the portion for which PSP funding is requested, if different.

Research project in Portugal

Please include a statement of research topic and study approach (maximum two pages). It should do the following:
1) State the relevance and significance of your study and its relation to previous work in the topic area.
2) State how the research you propose to accomplish in Portugal relates to your overall thesis/dissertation research.
3) State specifically how you plan to accomplish your goals, what research methods you will use, and what schedule you plan to follow.
4)If you plan to meet/interview people, indicate if you have contacted them already (or your plan to contact them) and whether they have agreed.
5) If your work will require Portuguese collaborators, indicate with whom you have arranged to work and arrangements you have made.
6) If you plan to access archives, confirm that the archives will be open and materials accessible.
7) Include a proposed schedule of activities, including locations, length of time, etc, and indicate Portuguese counterparts with whom you have been in contact.

Portuguese Language Course

Preference is given to students attending the Study in Portugal Network.  If student choses to attend annother language course, state which institution and reason for that selection, s well as specific learning goals for the summer (maximum 1 page).
