IES Undergraduate Conference

On November 17th, the Institute of European Studies hosted the annual Undergraduate Research
Conference. The Conference, titled From Kiev to Brussels: Understanding the Implications of
the War in Ukraine in a Broader European Context, featured nine presentations from UC
Berkeley, Stanford, and Deanza College students. The Conference was organized by the IES
URAP team led by Conference Chairperson Luca Zislin.

After introductory remarks from Professor Jeroen Dewulf, students presented research related to
the ongoing War in Ukraine. Jinze Hu, Ellie Andersen, and Grant Gillinger presented research
related to Ukrainian civil society. Afterwards, Alexander Richter, Christina Mueller, and
Zachary Yan presented their research regarding security and defense. Finally, Brett Dunham, Ali
Ansari, and Andrey Kapustin presented economic research.

The Conference concluded with a keynote address by Evan Reade, who previously served as the
Director for Western Europe on the National Security Council during the Obama Administration
before serving as the International Affairs Advisor to California Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis.
Students had the opportunity to ask Reade questions about his career before a reception for all
speakers and guests.
