Crown Prince Haakon of Norway visits UC Berkeley

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway visited UC Berkeley this week as part of a 2-day visit to California to promote sustainable climate cooperation between Norway and California. The Norwegian Minister of Trade, Jan Christian Vestre, and Consul General Gry Henriksen accompanied the Crown Prince’s delegation to Berkeley where they were welcomed by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Benjamin Hermalin and Senior International Officer Lisa Alvarez Cohen.

After introductions to campus leaders including Peder Sather Center Academic Director Trond Petersen and Executive Director Akasemi Newsome, Crown Prince Haakon met with 30 UC Berkeley graduate and undergraduate students. The royal visit to campus continued with a public event in the Chevron Auditorium of the International House on “AI and the Future of Work: Norway in Conversation with California.” Crown Prince Haakon offered opening remarks. The panel included a keynote by Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science, followed by a conversation moderated by Stephen Raphael, Director of the Institute of Research on Labor and Employment, with Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Jan Christian Vestre; President of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), Peggy Hessen Følsvik; and CEO of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), Ole Erik Almlid. Robert Strand, Executive Director of the UCB Nordic Center, gave closing remarks.

A Berkeley alumnus with a degree in Political Science (1999), Crown Prince Haakon lived in International House during his time at UC Berkeley. He last came to campus in 2013 preceding the launch of the Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study, a center under the umbrella of the Institute of European Studies. As a research collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Norwegian Research Council, the Peder Sather Center has funded 273 joint projects across all academic fields and awarded more than $5.6 million in research funding since its founding.
